One of the first Gregorian chants he learned, MacMillan reflects on the universal nature of this setting—something that can be sung in any parish, even the poorest ones. As “perfect” (i.e. “timeless”) music, it is particularly suited to instill a sense of the extraordinary nature of liturgy—that is, something outside of our normal, everyday experience. And while some professionals critique this collection of chants as coming relatively late in the Gregorian canon, MacMillan also sees this as an opportunity to create new plainsong for the liturgy.
