Sir James on Mendels-sohn’s Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Composer and Composition: Felix Mendels-sohn (1809-1847) Hark the Herald Angels Sing (1840) (Lyrics by Charles Wesley)

Sir James shows how sacred music can be universally appreciated through its hymn tradition.  Christmas Carols, in particular, have shown how they can be adapted musically in multiple ways, whether they be sung acappella or involve the most complex orchestrations.  Textually, Wesley’s texts draws our attention to the heavenly liturgy and to the ways God reveals Himself through the angelic choirs.
